Oct 12, 2011

The longer you try to ignore credit card debt the worse things will get. You need to take action to bring it under control as soon as possible. There are likely to be things that you can do right now to help you escape from your creditor. At the very least you will want to make sure that your current actions are not making the situation any worse. It is the aim of this article to share with you some effective tips that you can start using right away so as to deal with your credit card debt.

It is Time to Face Reality

The first thing you need to do when dealing with credit card debt is face reality. This means sitting down with pen and paper and having a serious look at where you are at. Ask yourself the following questions:

  • How much exactly do you owe?
  • How much will you need to pay each month to meet the minimum repayments?
  • How long will you need to pay the minimum amount before your debt is cleared?
  • How much interest will you pay during this time?
  • What is the maximum you can afford to allocate to debt each month?
  • Is there any way you can free up more money by cutting back on unnecessary items?

Once you fully understand your predicament you will be in a much better position to handle it.

How to Pay Back Less on Interest

One of the real drawbacks with credit cards is that the interest rate can be much higher than other forms of borrowing. This means that you can end up paying a small fortune on the interest over time. It therefore makes a lot of sense that you try to get a lower interest rate if at all possible. Here are a few suggestions for how you can do that:

  • Can you get a bank loan to cover your credit card bill? The interest from this should be a lot lower than what you are currently paying with your credit card.
  • If you have a number of debts then you might want to consider a debt consolidation loan. This means borrowing a lump sum of money to pay off all your debts so that you only have one repayment to manage each month.
  • Can you borrow money from family and friends to pay off your credit card bill? Many of us will feel hesitant about borrowing money from loved ones, but it really can be a great solution. Family members are unlikely to charge us high interest rates and they will be more understanding if we run into difficulties.
  • If you changed credit card companies would you get a lower rate of interest? You should only do this to ease your credit card interest repayments. If you begin using this as another line of credit you will just greatly worsen your current situation.
