FAQs for Credit Card Debt

Jul 22, 2011

Information is power when it comes to beating credit card debt. This is something that a lot of people get very stressed over, but they could avoid such torment if they had the right information. Here are the most frequently asked questions about this type of debt.

If I Keep Paying the Minimum Payments Will This Get Me Out of Debt?

While it is true that paying the minimum payment on your credit card should get you out of debt eventually it could take a very long time. This is because in a lot of instances you won’t be paying much more than the interest you owe. The longer you are in debt the more interest you pay and this benefits the creditor and not you. It could take years for you to clear your credit card debt this way and you will have wasted a lot of money on interest. Always try to pay above the minimum payment.

Should I Change Credit Cards if Offered Lower Interest?

This can be a good option but only when certain conditions apply. If another credit card company is offering a better interest rate you will want to check how long this is going to last for. There is no point in moving your debt for a lower interest rate that isn’t going to last long. There is also the risk that it could be a much higher rate later on – even higher than what you are paying with your current credit card. Another risk with this option is that you may be tempted to use both your old and new card and this will lead you into further problems.

Should I Apply for a Consolidation Loan?

If you have seen the advertisements on television you may have gained the impression that a consolidation loan is the answer to all debtors’ prayers. It is not that simple. A consolidation loan can work well for some people but it is not going to be the best choice for everyone. It is more suitable for those who have many debts where they are paying a lot of money in interest. The consolidation loan means that they can clear all of these debts and then be left with just one to repay – this means less interest. It needs to be remembered that not all consolidation loans are good ones and that you will usually be expected to offer some form of collateral such as your home.

How Can I Avoid Credit Card Debt in the Future?

Just getting out of debt isn’t going to be enough you will want to stay out of it permanently. This means changing your habits. It is not very practical to live without a credit card so the sensible approach is to learn to live with it effectively. Stop thinking about the limit on your credit cars as your money. You should also stop bringing your credit card with you wherever you go. People are more likely to impulse buy with a credit card than they are with cash.
