How to Negotiate Your Credit Card Debt

Oct 26, 2011

It has become common for people to find themselves in trouble with credit card debt. Most people do not plan for such a problem to arise; it just sort of creeps up on them. It is just so easy to use a credit card unwisely. These cards can be like a temptation that we always have in our wallet. It makes it easy to impulse shop without even thinking about the consequences. Before we know it we are in debt up to our eyeballs.

How to Negotiate Your Credit Card Debt

If you find yourself in a situation where your debt is out of control the worst thing you can do is try to ignore the situation. A lot of people are struggling with debt but there is almost always a solution that will work to help you escape the situation. One possibility is to negotiate directly with your creditor. Here are a few tips for how you can go about this.

  • Most of us feel a bit nervous about approaching our creditors to tell them about our financial situation. The reality is that doing so can be a hugely beneficial. The creditor is going to much prefer that you approach them then that you try to hide from them. By allowing them to know what is going on it proves to them that you are serious about rectifying the situation. They will almost always be understanding and willing to negotiate a way out of problems. It is usually only when people try to hide from their creditors that things get nasty.
  • In order to negotiate with your creditors you need to have a plan for how you can extract yourself from debt. This cannot just be something that you have made up off the top of your head. You will need documentation to support your negotiation position. This means that you will want to prove your income and the amount you can afford to pay back each month on your credit card bill. If the creditor is convinced that you can only pay back X amount each month they will be more willing to accept this.
  • It can sometimes be more effective if we have professionals negotiating on our behalf. A debt management company will have a lot of experience with this type of arrangement and they will be able to help you create a debt management plan. This is a proposal that you make to the creditors for how you intend to pay the money back. It will usually be significantly less than what you actually owe. In a lot of cases you will be expected to pay a fee for this type of service but this will be more than covered by the amount of money you will avoid paying back. The good thing about a debt management plan is that it will only be an amount you can afford. The plan usually only covers three years and once you get beyond this you are free of debt.
