How to Significantly Reduce Your Credit Card Debt

Sep 28, 2011

The worst thing about credit card debt is it tends to creep up on us. It only takes a few unwise choices before we find ourselves in a position where we are unable to clear the amount on our credit card each month. We start paying interest and before we know it our cards are maxed out. Then we wake up one day to realise that we are in over our heads. This can be a horrible realisation but luckily there are things we can do to significantly reduce our credit card debt. Once we have it under control we can then learn our lesson so that it never happens again in the future.

How to Significantly Reduce Your Credit Card Debt

Here are a few ideas for how you can significantly reduce your credit card debt.

  • One of the first things you will need to do is to have a serious look at your finances. This involves carefully considering your income and outgoings. The purpose of doing this is that you want to find any spare cash that you can put towards your credit card payments.
  • If you are really serious about reducing credit card debt then you should be prepared to make some sacrifices. This doesn’t mean that you need to cut out all enjoyment in life, but if you are willing to cut out some of them then this will be a huge help for significantly reducing your credit card bill. Not only will you be saving money by not going out but you will also be using this money to cut your debts.
  • If we have any recurring subscriptions for things like gym membership then it is worth considering if we really need these. A lot of us are paying subscriptions for things we don’ even use anymore; we just forget about them and we miss the fact that the money is still being taken out of our account. It would be far better to use this money to pay off our credit card debt.
  • One of the reasons why a lot of us continue to have credit card debt is that we have developed the bad habit of buying things on impulse. It is just too easy to reach for the credit card anytime we see things that catch our eye. The solution to this problem is to stop taking our credit card with us every time we go out. There is a lot of research that shows that people are far more likely to impulse buy with plastic than they are with hard cash.
  • In order to significantly reduce your credit card debt you will need to pay back more than the minimal amount each month. The problem with only paying the minimum is that it usually means that you are not paying back much more than the interest. This means that it could take you years to clear your debt and during that time you will have paid the bank a huge amount of money on interest.
