Remedies for Chronic Credit Card Debt
Jul 27, 2011 Most people will occasionally go a bit overboard with their credit card. This doesn’t have to be a problem so long as we are able to clear the debt quickly. Some of us have more serious problems with these pieces of plastic. We end in with chronic credit card debt where there seems to be no escape. Here are just a few of the suggested remedies for dealing with this type of debt.
- The reason why people fall into chronic credit card is usually because they have the wrong mentality in regards to this type of credit. This means that even if they should extract themselves from debt this time they will be likely to fall back into it again at a later date. Therefore the solution is to completely change the way we deal with credit cards. This will not only mean that we can escape chronic debt but stay that way.
- The first key to get out of chronic debt is to stop using these cards unless it is an emergency. I would suggest getting rid of them completely but that isn’t really practical in the modern world; it is probably better to learn to live with them.
- Get out of the habit of taking these cards with you wherever you go. The reason for this is simple; if you have them you are more likely to use them. There is a lot of research that shows that people are far more likely to impulse buy using a credit card than they are when using cash. The reason for this is that we tend not to view the credit card as real money.
- You also need to get out of the habit of thinking of your credit card limit as money you have. This is always going to be money you will later have to pay back so it is never money you have now.
- Most of us don’t fully understand the costs associated with using our credit card. This means that we fail to appreciate how much it is going to cost us to borrow this money. Make sure you understand who the interest works on your credit card and the difference between purchase and cash advanced interest.
- Always try to pay more than your minimal payment if you are serious about clearing your debts. This is because only paying the minimal is likely to keep you in debt for many years – a lot of what you pay will just cover the interest owed.
- Only consider a new credit card if you are ready to get rid of your old credit card. Don’t be tempted to use a new credit card as a way to get your hands on extra cash. The only legitimate reason for this type of application is that the new card offers a better rate of interest.
- Try not to increase your credit limit even if the bank offers to do this for you.
