Some Facts about Credit Cards

Nov 16, 2011

There is little doubt that credit cards can make life a lot easier. In fact it would be hard to manage today without these pieces of plastic. This is partly due to the importance of the internet in our lives. Most of us now use our credit card for purchasing things online. There is little doubt that there are benefits to owning a credit card, but there are also many downsides to it as well. It is important to consider the pros and cons so that we can have a healthier relationship with this type of credit.

Some Facts about Credit Cards

Here are just some of the facts about credit cards that you should consider:

  • People do tend to spend more money when they have a credit card than they would if they were spending hard cash. This is because people do not really feel like they are spending their own money when they are using the card. It has been shown that when people use plastic they are far more likely to impulse buy. There is just something sobering about handing over real money that prevents people from spending too much on frivolous things. Most of us will tend to take our credit card with us wherever we go so this propensity to impulse buy gets us into a lot of trouble.
  • Those who defend the credit card like to claim that it is possible to use this form of credit without falling into debt. They point out that sensible are able to clear their debts every month so that they never have to pay any interest. This is all very fine and well but the reality is that very few people manage to clear their debts every month; those who do manage to do this are in a small minority. The way the credit card defenders talk about things you would think that it is the ones who fall into debt who are the odd ones out – that is not the case at all.
  • Another claim that people make is that you only need to make the minimum repayments each month and things will be fine. This is another misconception. In a lot of instances just paying the minimum will mean that people will be in debt for many years, and during that time they will pay a fortune back in interest. This is because with some credit card companies the minimal repayments do not cover much more than the interest you owe each month.
  • The biggest mistake that people make with credit cards is that they begin to view this as their money. This means that when their credit card limit is raised they can view it almost like they have been given money in their bank account. They then go out to spend this money without fully realising how much trouble this can get them into. It is therefore vital that people learn to always keep in mind that this is money they will be borrowing.
